Phần introduction quyết định 60% impression của marker về bài bạn. Một intro lủng củng làm marker bước vào body với mindset "bài này có lẽ Pass thôi" và sẽ đọc khắc nghiệt hơn. Công thức 4 lớp cho intro chuẩn academic
Lớp 1: Hook tri thức (1 đến 2 câu)
Quên kiểu hook trường tiểu học (câu hỏi tu từ, fact gây sốc). Academic hook là một observation về current state of the field: một xu hướng đang nổi, một cuộc tranh luận đang diễn ra, hoặc một paradox đáng chú ý.
Yếu: "In today's modern world, technology is changing everything."
Mạnh: "While generative AI tools have been adopted by 78% of university students globally (UNESCO 2024), institutional policy has lagged: most Asian universities issued first-version AI guidelines only in 2024."
Lớp 2: Context narrowing (2 đến 3 câu)
Từ vấn đề rộng, bạn dẫn người đọc vào sub-area cụ thể bài bạn đang đặt vấn đề. Đây là chỗ bạn show bạn đã đọc literature. Có thể nhắc một vài tên dẫn dắt.
"This policy gap matters most in Vietnam, where higher education is rapidly modernizing yet relies heavily on essay-based assessment (Tran 2024). Recent debate has split into two camps: integrationists arguing for embedded AI literacy (Nguyen 2024) versus protectionists advocating strict bans (Pham 2023)."
Lớp 3: Thesis statement (1 câu, hardest part)
Đây là linh hồn của bài. Thesis phải:
- Trả lời câu hỏi essay một cách trực tiếp.
- Có một lập trường, không trung lập kiểu "có cả ưu và nhược."
- Có thể debate được, nghĩa là có người lý trí có thể không đồng ý.
- Cụ thể, không generic.
Yếu: "AI in education has both advantages and disadvantages."
Mạnh: "This essay argues that Vietnamese universities should adopt a graduated AI literacy framework rather than blanket bans, because protectionist policies fail to account for AI's role as a future workforce skill while creating compliance asymmetries that disadvantage rule-following students."
Lớp 4: Roadmap (1 câu cho essay ngắn, 2 câu cho thesis dài)
Cho người đọc biết bạn sẽ argue thesis như thế nào. Liệt kê 3 lý do hoặc 3 sub-argument theo đúng thứ tự bạn sẽ trình bày trong body.
"This argument is developed in three stages: first, by mapping current AI policy across five Vietnamese universities; second, by analyzing employer demand for AI-fluent graduates; and third, by proposing a five-tier literacy framework calibrated to assessment risk."

Bốn lớp rõ ràng, dưới 150 từ, đủ chỗ cho marker hiểu bạn sẽ làm gì.
Tỉ lệ vàng cho intro
- Essay 1500 từ: intro 130 đến 180 từ (10 đến 12%).
- Essay 3000 từ: intro 250 đến 350 từ (8 đến 12%).
- Thesis hoặc capstone: intro thường là 1 chương riêng, không tính tỉ lệ.
5 lỗi intro phổ biến nhất
- Quá rộng: bắt đầu bằng "Since the dawn of human civilization..." Marker rolls eyes ngay câu đầu.
- Định nghĩa từ điển: "According to Oxford Dictionary, AI is..." Tự sát ngay câu hai.
- Thesis lạc: thesis không khớp với những gì bạn argue trong body. Đây là dấu hiệu bạn viết body trước rồi mới nhồi intro.
- Không có roadmap: marker đọc body bị lạc vì không biết bạn đang ở đoạn nào trong argument.
- Roadmap không khớp body: bạn nói "first X, then Y, finally Z" nhưng body lại theo thứ tự Z, Y, X.
Một mẹo viết intro bị underrate
Viết intro SAU CÙNG, không phải đầu tiên. Lý do: bạn không biết thực sự argue gì cho tới khi viết xong body. Viết draft intro trước cho có hướng, nhưng phải sửa lại sau khi body hoàn thiện. Marker giỏi đọc 2 câu đầu intro và 2 câu cuối conclusion, nếu hai cái không match, họ biết bài này chưa edit.
Khác biệt intro essay với intro report và intro thesis
- Essay: argumentative, có thesis statement rõ.
- Report: descriptive, có purpose statement và scope thay vì thesis.
- Thesis (capstone): introduction là một chương 1 riêng, có background, problem statement, research question, significance, structure overview.
